A gateway without a name or context leaves you to follow your gut when deciding whether or not to step through.

…But of course, I can’t not give you any context whatsoever. No, really. I’m incapable of being quiet. This was possibly going to be named “Pearly Gateway” or “Crimson Gates”, despite my religious aversions.

Religion and I have a complicated relationship. I’m actually very spiritual! I’m also very opposed to organized religion and my ancestors probably have some choice words about religion in the context of colonization. So, while these may be doors into a cathedral, one might still ask if that’s what the image really conveys. Whether the cathedral itself can be likened to those pearly gates at all. Or perhaps, some might say that they’re more like the gateway to a much darker place. Of course, that golden light feels positively full of glory, so. Perspective, and all that.

That said, I’ve also always had an appreciation for architecture and let’s be real– they just don’t make buildings like they used to. I mean look at this! And the thing is, the sheer size and scale of the photo isn’t even really apparent. If I ever get to go back, a video is surely the only way to really capture the fact of the thing; what I hope I did manage to do was capture the essence it showed me.

There’s something to be said for the bold statement that a more minimalist decorating approach lends to the Gateway. However, my fellow maximalists can surely agree that being part of something bigger has it’s own poetic appeal. Available in three sizes on glossy photo paper, there’s something for either approach.
